GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT

The Country Club of Darien is seeking a Superintendent with exceptional agronomic, leadership and business management skills. Candidates should have a passion for the game of golf, a history of providing exceptional playing conditions and possess a strong attention to detail. This position is available because our long-time golf course Superintendent of 40 years has decided to retire. He will certainly be missed by the members of The Country Club of Darien.
The Superintendent reports to the General Manager at The Country Club of Darien and works closely with the Grounds Chairman. The Superintendent is expected to provide excellent leadership and lead the Grounds department to ensure excellent course conditions are presented on a continued basis and at championship standards for certain events. The Superintendent is responsible for all day-to-day operations of the Club’s golf course and grounds.
KEY SELECTION CRITERIA
The ideal candidate will be a Superintendent or a qualified Assistant Superintendent with experience at golf courses known for consistent, high performing playing conditioning preferably in the tri-state area.
In addition to demonstrating strong agronomic and turf management skills, prior experience and passion for major construction projects including new green construction, bunker renovation, and tee construction is strongly preferred. Given the irrigation system upgrade expected in the next few years, irrigation system design, repair and demonstrated water management skills are preferred. Strong attention to detail, leadership, and business management skills, coupled with analytical, decision-making abilities, are necessary for success. The ideal candidate must also be an excellent communicator and have ability to build relationships with club leadership, members, and staff.
Advanced knowledge of agronomy and turfgrass management with specific experience managing Poa annua / bent grass mixture greens.
A progressive turf manager with strong agronomic skills and demonstrated knowledge of advances in turf technology, irrigation management, and equipment.
Proven history of providing exceptional and consistent golfing conditions including firm and fast fairway and greens.
Experience maintaining healthy USGA and pushup constructed greens.
Subscribes to the benefits of environmental stewardship and sustainable maintenance practices. Demonstrated compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
Ability to convey and implement irrigation management philosophy & practices.
Experience with tree management as well as growing and maintaining native areas.
Leadership & Communication
Effective ambassador for the Club and provide leadership in the development and implementation of the Grounds maintenance program.
Proactive, high energy leader with proven management skills.
Strong relationship builder with a history of excellent relations with Club President, Grounds Chairman, Golf Professional, and General Manager.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, ability to explain technical issues in lay terms. The Superintendent will routinely present to Grounds Committees, occasionally present to Board of Directors and produce a monthly member newsletter.
Experience and ability to develop golf course standards and maintenance protocols.
Ability to attract, hire and mentor assistants that aspire to be Superintendents as well as the ability to foster a positive work environment.
Ability to communicate with Spanish speaking team members.
Proven ability to manage department finances and keep department on budget as well as develop and maintain annual capital and operating budgets.
Maintain equipment inventory and plan for major equipment purchases.
Ability to manage vendors and keep projects on track and on budget.
Observant, detailed-oriented, analytical, and curious are sought after skills.
INITIAL AREAS OF FOCUS
Evaluate current turf and soil conditions.
Review current maintenance practices and develop short and long-term. recommendations to maintain and improve upon CCD’s current excellent playing conditions.
Review 2021 capital plans and scope of work as there are plans to rebuild three greens, add tees and rebuild bunkers in 2021.
Create a 30, 60, 90 day and 1-year plan for the department and course.
EDUCATIONAL AND CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATIONS
A Bachelor or Associate’s Degree in Turfgrass Management or Agronomy
Valid Pesticide License with the ability to obtain CT State Pesticide License
GCSAA Certification is preferred
Demonstrated continuing education

The Country Club of Darien is located in the Long Island Sound shoreline town of Darien, CT approximately 45 miles north of New York City. Built in July 1957 by Edgar S. Auchincloss the club transformed from a family farm into an all-season Country Club. The 140-Acre grounds of the Country Club of Darien are fully equipped with an 18- hole Golf Course, Racquet Sports, Swimming, and Several Dining options open to a membership of ~ 600 families.
The original 18-hole layout was designed by Alfred Tull, who was a partner of noted course architect Devereux Emmet. He was also a construction engineer for the renowned architect A.W. Tillinghast, famed for his works at Baltusrol and Winged Foot, among others.
