This position gives the assistant a unique opportunity to be a part of a professional tournament environment, bunker restoration project, and be part of the decisions made each and every day on the golf course. The assistant’s primary responsibilities will be to develop as a manager, especially in proper moisture management, scouting abilities, team management, and improving their eye for detail through quality control. UMCC has prided itself in staying on the leading edge of the ever-changing technological landscape, using tools such as GPS Sprayers, Toro Lynx, Playbooks, digital job platforms, and much more. UMCC also prides itself in preparing its assistants to become Superintendents at their own pace, having produced 3 Superintendents in the last 5 years.

Upper Montclair Country Club is proudly scheduled to host the LPGA’s Cognizant Founders Cup in May of 2023 and 2024. UMCC has a long history of professional events and is one of a small group of courses to have hosted Tournaments from all three Professional Golf Associations. UMCC is looking for an assistant who wants to be a part of a place with a rich history and that provides the Turf Management Team the resources and tools necessary to help our professional team improve the property and themselves going forward.

Upper Montclair is a private 27-hole golf club located 9 miles West of New York City. The course was originally designed by A.W. Tillinghast in 1929. In the 1950s, a major course renovation was directed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. which transformed Upper Montclair Country Club into its present 27-hole Championship design. Upper Montclair Country Club has a strong tradition of producing championship conditions and is considered to be one of the best private clubs in northern New Jersey. 

Special Requirements:
The assistant superintendent will work with the Turf Management Team in all aspects of golf course maintenance. This includes but is not limited to: crew management, irrigation, project work, fertilizer & pesticide applications, record keeping, scouting, and water management. We each work six days a week in season and 5 day work weeks in the winter. Additionally, we arrange at least one 3-day weekend in season to recharge the batteries.

Educational Requirements:
Assistant must have earned a 2-4 year degree or certificate in Turfgrass Management or a related field.

Experience Requirements:
The position requires at least 1 year of golf course experience. We are looking for individuals who work well in a team environment, a basic comprehension of computer skills, have a passion for turfgrass/golf, and individuals who are motivated to improve themselves and the golf course daily. Spanish speaking is a plus but not a requirement.
